Its Time for PEAQ Stick Checks!

Our Forage Specialist  Callie Courtney has been out checking alfalfa fields today and here is what she found.

Callie has a couple of comments to share.
1. Alfalfa fields have grown an average of 5 inches this week!
2. This growth puts most fields on track to begin cutting for optimum forage quality the week of May 21st, 2018
There are two pictures shown here, one is of a regular Alfalfa Field near Waukon, IA and the other is of a Low Lignin Alfalfa field near Plainview. Both pictures were taken today, May 18, 2018. Callie would like to share how to read and calculate regular vs low lignin varieties.

So the 2 ways to read the stick for RFV

Conventional Alfalfa:
Measure alfalfa height match up with pre bud or post bud and read your number
Subtract 20 points for harvest loss and that will be the number you’ll have in storage.
Example if the alfalfa height reads 200 subtract 20 points so your storage number for RFV is 180

Low Lignin Varieties:
Measure alfalfa height match up with pre or post bud and read your number
Subtract 20 points for harvest loss
Add 15-20 points to adjust for low lignin
So really you just read number on stick without subtracting anything.
Example if the stick reads 200 then the RFV in storage will be 200
